The “North is Home to Me” project is a pilot under the EU, New European Bauhaus initiative, aiming to synergize the Swedish subarctic cities of Boden and Luleå via sustainable, aesthetic, and socially inclusive design. Funded by Swedish innovation funds, and comprising urbanists, engineers, cultural planning experts, and an Arctic artist, the “Team Nordic Future” produced proposals to leverage the area’s economic boom from green industries. The team conceptualized the “Bothnia Valley” vision, a blend of rural-urban living environments tied to nature. Analysis revealed an urbanism shaped by nomadic arctic lifestyles and a profound connection with nature, posing questions on its future evolution. The goal is to avoid urban sprawl but still connect to the nomadic way of life, respect nature, provide agile, inclusive services, and maintain efficient governance across a nomadic sub-artic landscape while cultivating strong and unique city identities.
