Gustav Magnusson led a multidisciplinary and international team in the architectural competition for the “Trelleborg Sjöstad” 50-hectare waterfront development. The city chose the team’s master plan, which is now being implemented. The objective was to expand the city center alongside the newly formed seafront due to harbor relocation. The team’s proposition defined a master plan, and an identity and effectively communicated its visions and narrative to stakeholders. They emphasized preserving Southern Swedish cultural values, including repurposing existing buildings and promoting circular urbanism. The seafront design plays with distinct architectural influences and creates a dynamic interplay between the historical harbor waterfront and the tradition of small-scale protected inland public spaces. Creating favorable microclimates sheltered from winter hurricane winds. The design spanned 6,200,000 square feet. The master plan focused on connecting to the way of life already in place, incorporating greenery, promoting walkability, and optimizing natural light by strategically placing schools. It expanded the city center and seamlessly blended Trelleborg’s past and future.
