Taksim Square has long served as a central hub of transportation and an iconic site in Istanbul, deeply connected to the city’s collective memory. Over the decades, the square has witnessed numerous historic events, functioning as a vibrant public space and a symbol of cultural and social interaction. However, recent interventions in the area have significantly altered its character. While the efforts to pedestrianize the square aimed to improve accessibility, they have inadvertently diminished its vitality. As a result, Taksim Square has lost some of its dynamic role in urban life and its resonance within public memory. Our project seeks to reimagine Taksim Square by preserving and revitalizing its identity while addressing contemporary urban needs. The primary goal is to develop a design that honors the square’s historical significance while ensuring its adaptability and relevance for future generations.
Phased Implementation
The project will be implemented in a flexible and staged process, allowing for gradual adaptation and integration into the existing urban framework. This approach minimizes disruption and promotes continuous public engagement.
Flexibility and Transformability
The proposed spaces will be multifunctional and adaptable, accommodating diverse activities and evolving needs over time. This design ensures that the square remains a dynamic and inclusive platform for everyone.
Enhanced Natural Light and Ventilation
The design incorporates innovative methods to maximize access to natural daylight and ventilation to improve the existing underground public transportation hub. This not only enhances the user experience but also contributes to sustainability and energy efficiency.
Pedestrian Bridge Connection
A new pedestrian bridge is proposed to connect Taksim Square with adjacent residential areas. This would address the challenging topography and foster better integration between the square and its surroundings.
Taksim Collective Platform
At the heart of the proposal is the creation of Taksim Collective, a cultural and social platform aimed at fostering community participation and dialogue. This initiative will act as a catalyst for the square’s transformation, ensuring its vibrancy and continuity as a living part of the city.
Through these strategies, the project aspires to restore Taksim Square’s vitality and reaffirm its position as a dynamic, inclusive, and memory-rich urban space. The design transcends mere physical interventions; it aims to foster a collective urban identity that connects the past, present, and future. The project is a winner of Taksim Urban Design International competition.
