Due to the centralization of bridge control in 2012, Amsterdam’s bridge houses became redundant. SWEETS Hotel repurposes this industrial heritage, turning the bridge houses into independent suits (sweets) with unique interiors, all designed with the architectural history of each of these tiny buildings in mind. The 28 iconic bridge houses, connected through canals, form an ode to Amsterdam and accentuate the importance of water for this former trading town. Starting as a concept, Sven actively pursued partnerships with the Municipality of Amsterdam, the creators of the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy, developer Grayfield, and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. Before its transformation into a hotel, the project unfolded through an exhibition, publication, and a series of boat tours, providing the public with a captivating glimpse into the nearly 300 years of rich history encapsulated by these charming bridge houses.
