Paintworks is a project of circularity. A circularity of use, through its typological adaptation of an existing 19th century Artists warehouse in London, and the circularity of materials re-constituted from building waste. Paintworks instrumentalized its dense urban context to create help to buy housing that goes beyond the metric needs of development.
In adapting and extending the existing building, DROO offered inhabitants nested common and personal spaces through striking picture boxes onto the cinema that is the city. Abundantly letting in light and creating an intimate individual scale of the experience within each alcove, the project uses the opportunity presented by the thickness of passive design envelopes to create this thick façade of large-scale slab to slab bays.
