Southern Sweden is a region that is being created, redefined, and constantly constructed. People, cultures, and traditions interact to form new multilocal identities. Malmö being the city with the most nationalities in the world after Washington DC and London, creates a unique setting. Invited to exhibit the architects manifested this ever-changing region in architecture and our approach to the region’s half-timbered tradition in a new way, enabling temporary, adaptable spaces in motion. “Our Soil” is a mobile, flexible, and modular half-timbered pavilion to develop public and local gathering places. The project shows architecture’s role as an organizing system and enabler of social relationships. It is the imagination of those who use the space that brings the architecture to life. The structure is an editable, modular public space that can be adapted to seasons, times of day, needs, and surprises. “Our Soil” exemplifies a mindset where we are all empowered to influence, anchor, drive, and own the architecture that creates the region’s diversity of meeting places, life, expressions, and identities.
