Still recovering from the 2019 earthquake, the town of Le Teil has embarked on a renewal of its public spaces guided by a philosophy of cohesion, unity, and community.
This solidarity, born from the natural disaster, is also reflected in the reconstruction efforts underway:
A central focal point is created around the remains of the old church.
A shared living space emerges at the heart of this place of remembrance.
Public services are brought together in this new centre: the new church, the library, and the museum.
The Robert Chapuis Library is part of this ensemble and also requires rehabilitation for functional, structural, and thermal reasons.
The project involves renovating and expanding the existing library to bring together two key programmatic entities for the region: the Museum of Resistance and Deportation in Ardèche & the Robert Chapuis Intercommunal Library.
The project is structured around three areas of work:
1.A GLOBAL VISION > CREATE UNITY
The project is part of the overall redevelopment of the Place Jean Macé, emphasising the polarity of the old and new churches. The newly restructured facility opens to the north onto the future public space, creating a strong connection with the landscape developments. Today, the volumetry of the building is complex, imposing and heterogeneous, marked by successive extensions. Tomorrow, the building’s image will be “calmed” and unify the various construction periods with a cohesive envelope.
2.CREATE ATTRACTIVENESS
The aim is to attract an audience that typically does not visit libraries or museums by emphasizing the dual programming of the facility. Today, the building is unstructured, very closed, and very opaque. Tomorrow, its architecture will be clear, open, and radiant in the public spaces.
3.CREATE A WARM LIVING SPACE
To foster social cohesion, the project evolves into a “cultural third place.” Its programming promotes conviviality, diversity, and intergenerational interaction by creating open, luminous, functional, flexible spaces accessible to everyone.
