This is a place where the city fades away, remembering what was for decades the flagship of its industry. With it, the social dynamics and urban connections have also disappeared, leaving a vast 75,000 sqm void that interrupts and denies any link between the city and its defining element: the sea.
The project envisions a unique and iconic building of immense size, capable of hosting thousands of people for fairs and concerts. It is complemented by a precise system of pavilions designed for smaller gatherings. The decision was made to repurpose the large steel-framed structure located along the central axis of the site. This structure, symbolizing the historical memory of the place, becomes the core of the masterplan, shaping a “building-route” that follows the existing framework, inviting visitors to discover and reconnect with the area.
A basement, designed as an artificial hill inspired by the raised platforms of Greek temples, is introduced. This feature eliminates visual obstacles and provides panoramic views for the spaces on the southeast side, which face the sea.
The transformation moves the site from a disused industrial zone to an extension of the natural environment of the coastline. Walls are replaced by green spaces and water features, creating permeability and opening the ‘ex Sanderson’ area to become an integral part of the district and the city.
Messina’s new trade fair and congress center is envisioned as a dynamic, elevated structure. Strengthened by its connection to the city and its people, it transforms from an isolated, industrial remnant into a monument of renewal. The center rises as a symbol of integration, sitting above and within the park, a place designed for the community and the city it serves.
