Maison Les Combes, 2018 – Arnaud Depeyre | Hautes Savoie, France
The project consists of the rehabilitation of an old barn whose north facade is classified to be preserved. Thus, the decision was made to leave the North and South facades intact ; openings are simply holes in the stone.
Double facades are built inside the structure. From the inside, wood joinery windows frame the holes in the stone as a dialogue in between two periods of construction and two typologies.
On the north side, the new facade is built 2 metres away from the old facade, while a staircase that follows the exterior topography allows connecting both accesses to the dwelling undercover. A massive concrete structure is linking the stone facade and the concrete block facade to stabilize the structure of the barn.
To face the harsh winter months, the house has been created with the possibility of being partially inhabited. This part includes a bedroom, a bathroom, and a large habitable kitchen with no need to access the high-ceiling living room.
