Leiðarhöfði is a unique natural formation, a place with a rich history and great social potential. The plot is a popular stopover on the nature trail along the coastline that frames several amazing views.
The winning design challenges the current planning for private housing, taking into account the town’s population desire for a new centrality in this unique location. It is thus proposed a community hall, a public structure that can accommodate several functions as well as activate and support outdoor activities.
The building rises rises slowly from the ground towards the town as a mirror of the Leidarhodfi itself, almost in an Ying yang gesture, generating a new street front and shielding the new plaza from dominant Northeast winds – a new protected valley in between the two hills, while opening its footprint to maximize sun exposure.
By peeking the roof we generate a new view point over Leidarhofdi and the surrounding nature.
The building is intended as porous and inviting from all sides, blurring indoor/outdoor boundaries.
The green roof extends the local flora, and becomes an extension of the pedestrian promenade that offers a new point of view over the town and surrounding nature.
It has 500m2 that can be divided in different ways. It is intended as a versatile multi-purpose space that can adjust to several different uses for the local population and visitors. It has a permanent café with service for kayak and bicycle rentals. The open space can be adapted to different needs, from 50m2 to 300m2 and can accommodate different kinds of events, such as art and educational exhibitions, cinema evenings, children’s plays, concerts, workshops, lectures or conferences.
Its strategic location, with the village school and senior center in a walking distance, allows this building to become an extension of the program for these spaces, becoming a new intergenerational hub.
By removing the landfill built through time, we bring back this wetland with a new year round purpose: a pond in warmer months, and ice skating ring in the colder ones.
