The design for the conversion of the Prinz Leopold and Pionier-barracks in Regensburg, already internationally acclaimed, consists of a 33.5-hectare site, where new urban structures are being created connecting the surrounding neighborhoods and creating a sustainable living environment.
The design for Regensburg’s last significant inner-city conversion site fits harmoniously into its context and creates a variety of added values for future residents. The heart of the project is a spacious park as the green centre of the new quarter, an urban link, and a central recreational space for the entire barracks district.
To the north, the park connects to Plato-Wild-Strasse, creating a natural link between the neighborhoods to the north, the new quarter and the higher-level open spaces, and Pürkelgut Castle to the south.
On Landshuter Straße, a series of forecourts provide entrances to the new quarter and the park. In particular, the overarching green corridor of Alemannenstraße is taken up and extended into the park.
Mixed-use neighborhoods with different focal points are grouped around the central park: These form small neighborhood squares as anchor points and are connected by a ring boulevard. The existing urban structure of close-by neighborhoods in the north with their large residential courtyards is continued and the new urban neighborhood thus blends naturally into its surroundings in terms of morphology.
