The Kelenn Hall, located in Carantec, is a former sports hall built by the Breton architect G. Le Lann in 1979. The town of Carantec decided to transform this space into a true “multipurpose hall.”
It is situated close to the town center, on a remarkable site between the sea and a natural wetland area. The building blends harmoniously with its immediate surroundings, consisting of Breton houses, by using the style of a large slate-pitched roof.
The existing building consists of two parts : a main volume with a wooden frame and slate roof that previously housed the sports court, and an annex with a flat roof that contained the entrance hall and changing rooms.
The hall’s roof has been completely renovated. To simplify the roof’s expression, the diamond-shaped openings scattered across it have been removed. Photovoltaic panels have been installed on the western slope. These matte-finish panels are integrated into the roof plane and are bordered by a slate covering on the perimeter.
Natural light in the hall is primarily provided through the renovation of existing glazing systems, including the large glass panels on the longitudinal façades.
Two large carriage doors have been placed on the gable ends of the hall. These allow for a generous opening of the covered spaces to the outside, while also permitting access for large vehicles, such as trucks, particularly when setting up for events.
The concrete base of the hall, as well as the concrete façades of the annex, have been cleaned and revealed with a light grey stain.
The non-load-bearing existing gables of the hall have been rebuilt to introduce diffused light into the large volume of the hall. These gables consist of a vertical timber frame, protected by translucent cellular panels. This structure is externally covered with a vertical, perforated wooden cladding, treated with Falun black stain.
The large carriage doors installed on the gable ends of the hall are clad in wood.
In keeping with the intentions of the original building, both the formal expression of the project and its materials reflect an architecture that is respectful of the site and its construction heritage, while being firmly grounded in the present time.
