The architectural concept for a cooperative and crisis-proof neighborhood on Rotweg won the first prize in the international urban design competition as part of the IBA27 — productive urban region Stuttgart.
The design proposes a loosened structure of robust buildings with a diverse range of open spaces. Ten three- to seven-story buildings are grouped around a network of small squares for a high quality of stay. A central “community meadow” forms the heart of the neighborhood, while green “anchor places” at the edges create the connection to the surrounding neighborhoods.
The existing trees are to be largely preserved. Community and commercial facilities can be accommodated on the ground floors: Daycare centres, shops, spaces for possible studios, workshops, or co-working spaces, as well as a laundrette or a neighborhood kitchen.
On the floors above, a variety of flats are planned, from small flats to family flats to cluster flats. On the roofs of the buildings, which are constructed using the timber hybrid construction method, there will be green roof terraces for the residents.
From the House of the Future (IBA 1927) to the Neighbourhood of the Future (IBA 2027): In the 1920s, the IBA was looking for answers as to the house of the future, a new way of living and, associated with this, a new aesthetic of building.
100 years later, they are again looking for something new within the framework of the IBA, but the themes have changed. Today the search is for new forms of living together in the neighborhood, new links between living and working, and diverse uses of green and open spaces for a pleasant urban climate. All these aspects play a role in creating a crisis-proof neighborhood for self-determined living.
