The future fiction for a sustainability quarter in Berlin was conceived in the context of concrete proposals for solutions for an innovative model quarter that would test innovative coexistence on the outskirts of the city as a sustainable and future-oriented urban extension.
The design focuses on urban qualities, the intensive experience of urban nature, and a high degree of adaptability. A Berlin residential dream is fulfilled in the synergetic interplay of a lively urban and productive green loop as a fractal model for a liveable urban quarter at the interface with the landscape. True to the motto: Lively urban out the front and natural green out the back!
The concept of the new city quarter is based on a symbiotic combination of lively urban and productive green urban spaces. At the neighborhood level, this is implemented through an urban and a green loop.
Beyond their internal qualities and offerings, both loops also create added value for the neighboring quarters and are derived from them. In the green loop, the existing single-family house structures receive an offer of high-quality communal and public open spaces that is lacking today.
The adjacent large housing estate finds new small-scale offers of urban life in the urban loop, which do not exist in this form today. At the intersection of the two loops, a neighborhood centre is created with offers for the new and adjacent neighborhoods in direct connection to the S-Bahn station and the higher-level public transport network.
The two loops and the neighborhood centre form the overarching open space framework of the new urban quarter, which is divided within this structure into different neighborhoods with associated squares.
These neighborhoods have a thematic focus and thus form independent identities through their different uses and densities. The different neighborhoods — the Maker Tower City, the Gartenstadt 2.0, and the 5-Minuten Kiez — build differentiated relationships with other districts.
