The Multi-Purpose Performance Center Workshops and Stage (Opera and Theatre Workshop), commissioned by Muratpaşa Municipality in Antalya, is strategically positioned between two major vehicular axes—1450th Street to the north and Çınarlı Avenue to the south. This location establishes the site as a transitional bridge within the district, further enhanced by a green landscape extending from the cliffs in the south to a bustling commercial center. This ecological corridor, marked by tall trees, significantly influences the project’s design, emphasizing sustainability and integration with the natural environment.
Context
Antalya’s Mediterranean climate strongly informs the center’s design, prioritizing shaded, flexible spaces that foster social interaction during twilight hours. The lush landscape not only provides natural cooling but also transforms the area into a public focal point. The design embraces permeability, connecting city users to the building and integrating park vistas from various elevations. Beyond its primary function, the structure promotes social engagement, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape to accommodate diverse user needs.
Design
The dominant feature, the Multi-Purpose Performance Hall, is designed to meet stringent acoustic and technical requirements. Supporting elements, including an orchestra pit, side stages, and lighting control, ensure visual and auditory excellence. The adjoining foyer serves as a dynamic interface between urban activity and performance spaces, enhancing public accessibility.
Workshops and rehearsal rooms are organized along the “Art Street,” connecting various spaces, while the forecourt features a restaurant, observation platform, and event courtyard. These semi-open and open spaces encourage interaction with artistic activities, extending usage beyond scheduled events. Elevated walking platforms and terraces enhance usability and foster engagement with the surrounding environment.
Technical volumes, including service entrances and parking, are discreetly integrated, while management units at the northern entrance enable efficient oversight.
Development
The project emphasizes vertical spatial connections, including a balcony extension from the upper foyer level. The hall’s dimensions have been optimized for acoustics and ergonomics, ensuring a comfortable viewer experience. The “Art Street” is further widened to integrate with an upper-level promenade, extending the building’s functional reach into the park.
The permeable shell, with consistent high concrete beams, serves as both an architectural statement and a climatic buffer. Solid core facades are reoriented to optimize service functions, maintaining ergonomic and climatic efficiency.
In essence, the design harmonizes an iconic performance hall with permeable spaces that sustain user dynamics, reinforcing the center’s role as a sustainable and socially integrative urban landmark.
